Mr. Roboto meet Mrs. Roboto

You never know what you are going to get at the Nebraska State Fair. Last year my sister tried to set me up with the tallest man at the fair (the stilt man…because I’m 6’1”). Unfortunately he was married. This year my man…er, uh, robot, Oscar found me.
Oscar is the fair’s robot who religiously takes part in the parade at 6:00 pm every evening. He also happens to “rest and recharge” in the closet in Ag Hall by our GROW Store, so Oscar and I get a little time to chat each day.
As the fair has continued on, I thought that my new main man Oscar had started wearing off on me. I found myself wearing a programmed smile, following the same routine actions, saying the same words, “Did you find everything okay? Thanks for stopping in. Have a good day and enjoy the fair.”
Then I realized that maybe I’m not as close to Oscar as I thought. Although some parts of the job do get a bit redundant, I love getting the chance to chat with members who have come in to work or seeing shoppers find something that they love. The actions and words aren’t robotic they are genuine, as I really do want people to enjoy the last State Fair in Lincoln. I’m excited about “non-robotic” friends I’ve made and the memories that will tie me over until next year’s State Fair, where new traditions, new friends and new memories will be made.
So, I’ve broken it off with Oscar, and ladies, he’s a single fellow once again (and he comes with a 90 day warranty). You can check out Oscar at the Kansas State Fair starting next week or look him up online at www.oscartherobot.com.
